I know many of you may look in the mirror and say to yourself, "I look healthy, but I don't think I should be on a diet program." The truth is that although health is usually seen on the outside, most of what happens is inside our bodies.
Many people in North America have digestive problems. Ayurveda sees these issues as all health conditions in your life. You run to the drug store for antacids, and pills to relieve your upset stomach and diarrhea. Pain relievers are close with new Consultants! Your body tells its own story! Something is wrong, you should listen, but we don't listen until we're sick.
These are the telltale signs that your body isn't right.
You begin to gain weight. Eating sweet and salty foods can cause you to gain weight and add extra weight to your body. Sweetness is also a sense of satisfaction, and in Ayurveda, sweet foods can be included in the diet to help with satisfaction.
You have a coating on your tongue. Take care of your tongue when you get up in the morning. If you have a white, yellow, or brown coating on your tongue, the food is not being digested properly and this is the first sign of something coming.
This is often witnessed as an imbalance of agni manda and vata. Many people use laxatives and gas relievers to help with the problem. Vata people love a lot of smoothies and green salads: two of the worst things a vata can do to their digestion. They should eat more cooked and less salad. Cold salad and weather are too much for vata constitution.
Frequent diarrhea. This can be a situation that many people live in and don't realize that the fire element is out of balance. Diarrhea can be the body's way of getting rid of harmful substances. It is a good idea to treat diarrhea itself for a few days, but if diarrhea can be a recurring event, you may want to look at your diet for foods that irritate the digestive system or balance the element of fire in the body. Often, diarrhea can deplete the body of water elements, causing dehydration, and no effective assimilation of food and malnourished people. Stress is one of the world's silent killers. Stress will cause many diseases and one of them is heart disease. This is a disorder of the blood vessels in the heart, which can lead to heart disease.
You often feel depressed or anxious. Ayurveda says that food affects our thoughts, feelings, and consciousness. Anxiety and depression can be the result (poorly digested food).

So what can you do?
1. Don't drink cold water anymore
2. Only 1/2 cup of warm water with your meal
3. No sweets in the morning - for many people, this helps with weight gain and weight loss
4. No coffee in the morning on an empty stomach
5. Eat only fruit
6. Sit down to eat
7. Eat your biggest meal during the day
